Our History

About

From more than a Century, through our family's dedication our goal is to bring you the a whole new set Shochu's that you can enjoy

Ebisu
An Encounter

Mr. Takejiro OGI, who was born as a son of pharmaceutical family in Haki at the end of Edo Period, went to Nagasaki to study medicine. He met Mr. Gishiro KAJIYAMA as his roommate, who later was the founder of modern distillation technique.in Japan. Mr. OGI got good vibes from Mr. Kajiyama and he started to be interested in making distilled alcohol.

Ebisu
A Family

When he returned to his hometown Haki several years later, he already decided to devote himself to alcohol distillilation. Thanks to the support from his younger brother Mr. Yoshitaro OGI and other relatives, Mr. Takejiro OGI established his own distillery in 1885.

Ebisu
EBISU

The stone statue of Ebisu was built to pray for the business success at the time of distillery opening. Thus we have been called “Ebisu Distillery” and beloved by local people since then.

Ebisu
AN Atmosphere

We used to operate a standing bar at a corner of liquor shop, so-called “Kaku-uchi”, with many local people who dropped at after work as their social and communication space

Ebisu

Did you know ? Ebisu, one of the seven deities of fortune in Japan, is enshrined as the god of wealth and business success.

expertise

In addition to a very popular local rice Shochu “Fukutoku Ebisu”, Mr. Jitsuzo OGI, the third generation of Ebisu distillery, tried to develop more attractive and higher quality product. He started to make a trial by using totally rare method in the 1960’s, aged and matured Shochu in oak barrel. In 1969, he finally succeeded in bottling “ALEMBIC (LAMBIKI) and commercialized. Today we have 6 different lineups according to the tastes and the years of aging, 3, 5, and 10 years. The longer it is aged, the milder and more matured they are, which often produce exceptional flavors, like vanilla, almond and fruits.

ORIGINS OF Ranbiki

Our products “LAMBIKI (Ranbiki *in Hepburn system)” are named after “Alembic”, a distillation apparatus invented in ancient Greecem when alchemy was developed in the 4th century B.C. A single-type distillation apparatus called “Alembic” was invented during the process. Although there are too many stories about how this technique was brought into Japan, the word “RANBIKI”, which means distiller in Japanese, was derived from the Portuguese “Alembic”.

Distillation A constant challenge

Distillation technique brought from overseas was uniquely modified, adapted to produce Japanese Shochu, and its quality is widely recognized in the world.

We wish that our authentic Shochu products, inspired by our strong passion, will be appreciated and enjoyed by worldwide Shochu fans.
